Rincon de la Vieja National Park
The volcano Rincon de la Vieja has several hiking trails to different attractions, such as waterfalls, hot springs, mud pots, steam vents and sulpher lagoons. Toucans, monkeys, and butterflies proliferate this region
The most popular trail is Las Pailas, which is about 2 miles long. It is a moderate hike that crosses the tropical humid forest and the volcanic activity such as mud pots. During the walk or hike, some river creeks will be crossed.
Rincon de la Vieja National Park has wildlife frequently observed, example: monkeys, birds, rodents and butterflies can be observed during this walk. In mother nature the animals will search for food, this is why a local expert is required. The trained eyes of the naturalist guide is very much needed to accomplish this search. Bringing a set of binoculars is useful during the hike. Cameras with tele-photo lens are also a fantastic way to capture good photos of animals in natural habitat.
Rincon de la Vieja National Park also has a trail to a waterfall called La Cangreja. Park visitors like this attraction in order to swim and also hike for at least 3 to 4 hours one way. Yes, one way!
The trail that leads to the active crater is closed due to recent volcanic activity. This hike is also about 4 hours one way.
What to bring: walking shoes, water, bug repellent, camera binoculars and change of clothes.
